HISTORY OF SANFORD ROTARY CLUB
The Sanford Rotary Noon Club traces its origins back to 1921 when Colonel Geo W. Knight came to Sanford following his discharge after World War I. Col. Knight was formerly a Rotarian in New Jersey and missed the fellowship he enjoyed being in Rotary. He originally started an organization called “Club 13”, inviting a number of respected businessmen from diverse vocations to participate. A short time later, the Orlando Rotary Club sent Ken Guernsey to investigate Sanford’s Club 13, who highly recommended it for Rotary charter. On May 10, 1921, The Sanford Rotary Club was chartered under Charter #873 and became part of district #8, which at the time covered all of Georgia and Florida. Today’s Sanford Rotary Noon Club continues to carry on the club’s founding tradition of supporting local and international efforts.
